Professor Jorge Mura, MD, IFAANS, FACS
Dr. Jorge Mura, a distinguished Chilean neurosurgeon, is a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Chile and a recognized leader in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery. He graduated cum laude in Medicine from the University of Chile and completed his residency summa cum laude at the Institute of Neurosurgery Alfonso Asenjo. He further trained under Dr. Evandro de Oliveira in São Paulo, Brazil, where he completed a fellowship in Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery.
Since 1999, Dr. Mura has contributed extensively to academic neurosurgery, founding the first Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery Fellowship in Chile. This program has since trained over 50 neurosurgeons from across the Americas and Europe. He has held numerous leadership roles, including Director of the Chilean Society of Neurosurgery (2005-2015), Coordinator of the Chilean Chapter of Cerebrovascular Surgery (2005-2020), and President of the Chilean Society of Neurosurgery (2021-2023).
With a prolific academic portfolio, Dr. Mura has authored over 100 publications, contributed chapters to key neurosurgical textbooks, and delivered more than 150 international lectures. He has performed over 4,200 brain surgeries, including clipping 1,479 aneurysms, completing 175 cerebral bypasses, and performing more than 750 complex skull base procedures. His expertise also includes innovative work in minimally invasive and keyhole surgical techniques (MIPLATTA), focusing on complex aneurysms and skull base tumors.
In recognition of his contributions, he was named “Master of Chilean Neurosurgery” by the Chilean Society of Neurosurgery in 2020, an honor awarded to only four individuals since 1957. Dr. Mura continues to dedicate his career to advancing neurosurgical techniques and training future neurosurgeons in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery.
